The State Central Library of Mongolia building

The State Central Library of Mongolia was founded under the name "Book
Chamber" with an initial stock of 2000 books on November 9, 1921
by decision of the Mongolian Government.

The Mongolian Government changed its name into Institute of Sutras and
Scripts on November 19, 1921.

The reading room for public was opened for the first time in Mongolia on
November 24, 1923.

It became the "State Library" on November 6, 1924 by decision of
the first State Congress.

Stacks for Asian and European books had been arranged at the library as
the result of book collections development.

The government decree no. 164, released in 1935 obliges book publishers
to donate 3 mandatory copies to library collections.

The 10th Congress of Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party and 8th State
Congress held in 1940 released a decree to set up public libraries
in towns and provinces (aimags).

The quantity of library patrons, clients were 129 in 1922, but the
number increased up to 1900 in 1941 and a service scope increased
14 fold times, reaching 97.000 volumes kept in Stacks.

State Central Library of Mongolia started its first foreign book exchange
with the former Lenin State Library, USSR in 1948.

State Central Library of Mongolia was named after I. Stalin on occasion
of his 70th birthday by decree no. 34 of Governing Body of Mongolian People's
Republic on December 20,1949.

The monument to I. Stalin erected in front of the library's main building
had been taken away in the evening on February 22, 1990. Since this
time, the library ceased to be named after I. Stalin.

The present main building of the library was built in 1951.

Book Processing Division was established on April 15, 1955 and the
division functions under the title "Book Acquisition, Processing and Exchange
Division" now.

Division for Storage and Stacks was established on April 11, 1957.

Methodical Division was established on January 11, 1961 and functions
under the title "Information, Methodics and Science Division" now.

The reading room for researchers and scientific workers was opened in 1961.

The reference bureau for readers was established in 1963 at the
reading room for public.

State Central Library of Mongolia became a depository library of United
Nations publications in 1968.

The first issue of a journal "Nomyn sanch" (Librarian) was released in
1975
and the journal functions as the only promotional literature for Mongolian
librarians so far.

Administration and House holding Unit was established on 1976 and
became a Division in 1992.

The exhibition of rare valuable books was initiated on August 4, 1976
and became a museum in 1995.
-
"Library and Bibliography Classification" (BBK) was introduced into the
activity of State Central Library of Mongolia and this classification system
was a subject to follow for all libraries throughout the country.

The branch library State Central Library of Mongolia was built at the Central
Cultural Palace in 1989. The branch library has 5 stacks and reading
rooms for public, music, maps, UN publications and restoration laboratory.

State Central Library of Mongolia became a member of International Federation
of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) in 1991.

SCLM has been organizing annual conferences on essential library issues
since 1997.

SCLM had an electronic catalogue for Mongolian books in 1999.

The projects "Pushkin's library", "Book donation" for enriching library
collections have been implementing at the library under the sponsorship
of Soros Foundations since 1999.

SCLM has been organizing an annual "Book Fair" since 1999.

SCLM had been connected to the Internet in 2000 under the sponsorship
of Soros Foundations.

The project "Training Resource Center for Mongolian librarians" has been
conducting at the SCLM since 2001 under the sponsorship of Soros
Foundations. Over 500 librarians from urban and rural areas have been involved
in training sessions so far.

At present, the State Central Library of Mongolia is the largest library
in Mongolia with more than 4 mln books and publications.

As well, the State Central Library of Mongolia is Methodical and Professional
Advancement Center for all libraries throughout the country.

1240, is in many foreign languages.
